Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 small slice (67 inches) French bread or baguette, about 1-1.5 inches thick
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (extra virgin preferred)
  • 23 tablespoons tomato sauce (pizza or marinara sauce)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (whole milk or part-skim)
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Pinch of garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: pepperoni slices, sliced olives, mushrooms, bell peppers, fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Cut a 6-7 inch slice from your French bread loaf, about 1-1.5 inches thick. Brush the top and edges lightly with 1 tablespoon olive oil.
  3. Place the bread oil-side up on a baking sheet and bake for 5-6 minutes until edges start turning golden but not browned.
  4. Remove the bread from the oven and spoon 2-3 tablespoons of tomato sauce evenly over the top, leaving a small border around the edges.
  5. Sprinkle a pinch of garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano, salt, and pepper over the sauce.
  6. Evenly distribute 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella on top of the sauce. Add 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan if using.
  7. Add any optional toppings like pepperoni, olives, or veggies, keeping toppings light.
  8. Place back in the oven for another 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted, bubbly, and starting to brown on the edges.
  9. If desired, broil for the last 1-2 minutes to crisp the crust further, watching closely to avoid burning.
  10. Let the pizza cool for a minute or two before slicing and serving.

Notes

Brush the bread generously with olive oil for crispiness. Pre-toast the bread to prevent sogginess. Use shredded cheese for even melting. Keep toppings light to maintain crispness. Watch oven carefully, especially when broiling. Let pizza rest before eating to avoid burns. For gluten-free, substitute bread and adjust baking time. Vegan cheese can be used for dairy-free version.
