A fun and comforting snack featuring hot dogs wrapped in flaky crescent roll dough twisted into mummy shapes, served with a spicy honey mustard dip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package crescent roll dough (about 8 oz / 227 g)
  • 8 hot dogs or smoked sausages (regular or beef; vegetarian sausages optional)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (100 g)
  • Black olives, sliced (for ‘eyes’)
  • 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water (egg wash)
  • For the Spicy Honey Mustard Dip:
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard (60 ml)
  • 2 tbsp honey (30 ml)
  • 1 tsp hot sauce (or to taste, e.g., smoky chipotle sauce)
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise (30 ml)
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (5 ml)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Unroll the crescent roll dough onto a clean surface. Slice the dough into thin strips about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) wide using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  3. Take one hot dog and sprinkle a little shredded cheddar cheese along its length.
  4. Wrap dough strips around the hot dog in a crisscross pattern, leaving small gaps for ‘eyes’. Do not wrap too tightly.
  5. Place two small black olive slices in one of the gaps to mimic eyes.
  6. Lightly brush each wrapped hot dog with the beaten egg wash for a golden, glossy finish.
  7. Place the mummies on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  8. While the mummies bake, whisk together Dijon mustard, honey, hot sauce, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Adjust heat as desired.
  9. Once baked, let the mummy twists cool slightly (about 5 minutes) before serving with the spicy honey mustard dip.

Notes

Do not overwrap the dough strips; leave gaps for crispiness and to create the mummy ‘eyes’. Use cold dough for easier handling. Check oven at 15 minutes to avoid overbaking. The dip can be made ahead and refrigerated to deepen flavors. Leftovers store well in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheat best in an oven or toaster oven to maintain crispiness. Avoid microwaving to prevent soggy pastry.
